Seems everybody wants to save a buck in today’s economic downturn and who isn’t. One thing most people tend to save a lot on is with concern to their electrical consumption for it is one of the biggest costs of living where ever that may be. Older incandescent lamps used to be the norm but with today’s CFL lamps, wasted electricity in terms of lighting is a thing of the past. There are however some precautions that can make these already energy saving lamps last longer and that is using them for more than fifteen minutes, counter-intuitive isn’t it? Why, well these bulbs are so efficient that a 5 watt bulb has the same light output of a 25 watt incandescent but we normally use them for less than the specified time. This can lead to premature failure of the bulb which can be seen in the blackening of the bulb and as time passes the light output diminishes too.
In bathrooms and other dark spaces, try to get them to burn for more that 15 minutes to prolong their life which is normally on the package in terms of thhe number of hours it should last. Any lighting fixture that uses florescent bulbs have either ballasts or electronic ones that causes the arc to form thus initiating the light production process. The most power in it’s use comes from the start-up process which is called the warm-up period. Some are almost instantaneous and some take a few seconds to reach the optimal light output so when using these bulbs, leave them on a bit longer, they will not only last longer but saves more in the long run.
